Graduates
From Sons of the Thames Rowing Club
Have you just moved to London?
Starting your first job?
Want to row, but not sure how it will fit in with work and life?
Sons of the Thames could be the club for you.
We are a competitive club based in Hammersmith (just 20 minutes from central London on the tube) catering for people who are looking to balance hectic work schedules with training.
What we can offer you:
- Dedicated coaching
- An excellent fleet of boats – sweep and sculling
- A lively squad atmosphere with many new graduates, as well as established senior rowers and veterans
- A beautiful club house (which serves as our private bar)
- A wide range of social activities – from summer drinking by the river to Christmas Balls and Henley picnics.
Our ethos is to work hard, row hard and play hard.
Work Hard
We have recent graduates who are now training to be accountants, doctors, lawyers. There are a number of bankers, civil servants, teachers, PhD students and engineers. Proof that whatever your career path, it is still possible to enjoy all that rowing has to offer.
Train Hard
We do train hard – our top athletes train at least 4 times during the week, and Saturday and Sundays. But we are flexible, and you can train at the time which suits you – early in the morning, late at night, in your lunch hour.
There is the opportunity to compete in small boats – singles, doubles and pairs – as well as the larger squad boats. Although our primary focus is on the major heads and regattas, such as the Fours Head and Eights Head, we also enter a number of smaller summer “club” regattas, like Peterborough and Oxford City. For these regattas we often go away and camp – a perfect way of escaping London for the weekend!
If you have coxed at university, we would also love to hear from you. We believe it is as important to train our coxes as our rowers. If you want to learn to steer the tideway, or to master different style boats – for example bow loaders – then Sons is a perfect place to come and learn.
Play Hard
If you are new to London there is nothing better than joining a sociable club to make new friends. On top of the time spent rowing and training, we organise many formal and informal socials. From Sunday morning breakfasts at the river pub next door, to the formal Annual Dinner, there is always something going on. We organise club BBQs, quizzes, cheese & wines, Burn’s Night Suppers and have a weekly club night.
If you are interested in learning more about Sons, then we would be happy to show you around the club and introduce you to the different squads. Please contact the men’s captain Kenny MacLure or the women’s captain, Cat Hart.
