Women's Rowing
From Sons of the Thames Rowing Club
Join a squad that’s successful, motivated and focused on individual performance! With the highest coach to athlete ratio on the tideway, under the expert supervision of John McArthur, ex-international coach, Sons really is the place to be to develop your talent.
The women's squad has just experienced its most successful season in recent history with prominent wins at the Met, Henley Womenâs Regatta and a silver medal at the National Championships, as well as victories at local level regattas such as Barnes & Mortlake. At the Met, the senior coxed four won both IM1 and SEN events while at HWR they won the Frank Harry Cup for Senior coxed fours, breaking the course record which had previously stood since 1992. In a nail-biting final of the women's coxed fours at Nat Champs, the crew missed out on the gold by just half a second. But it's not just the top of the squad that experiences success at Sons. The strength and depth in the squad meant that we were able to come 2nd overall in the Victor Ludorum Trophy at Peterborough Summer last year without even taking the men!
Through the winter we operate an open squad system, where athletes have the opportunity to row in a mix of boats and, courtesy of a highly structured training programme, develop both fitness and technique. Over the summer, set racing crews are each assigned an individual coach who works intensely with the crew to best prepare them for whatever level of racing they’re competing in, from National Championships to their first ever regatta.
At Sons, we believe preparation is the key to success. The training programme works as a long-term structure, enabling all athletes to achieve their goals. The coaching team works as a unit, using team-coaching and regular video analysis to offer feedback and develop in every outing. Coaches regularly move between squads to give a fresh perspective and share their skills. This means that all athletes have access to a wide variety of coaching experience and helps to develop a strong club ethos.
While our athletes balance rowing with demanding careers, our professional approach allows us to get the most out of each training session. Whether you’re returning to rowing from a break, or coming straight from another club, Sons provides a carefully managed development programme suited to you. The women’s squad it keen to develop novices and those who join the club through beginners courses are quickly integrated into the main squad. Highlights of the year included our annual spring training camp which this Easter was held a Temple-sur-Lot, France. We enjoyed beautiful weather and water conditions and saw invaluable progress in fitness, technique and racing mentality through the week thanks to intensive coaching and inter-club racing.
